Compass will be an easier 'get started' install, after that they are the same. Anna could provide more detail, but the current kernel allows us to add DRAWS/UDRC support after installation, previous versions of the kernel required us building a new kernel to support the sound chip.

DRAWS Discussion

DRAWS and UDRC discussions will be in https://nw-digital-radio.groups.io/g/udrc

The early adopter pricing for the DRAWS board is now live.

For those who were not in attendance at DCC or the NWAPRS summer gathering, NW Digital Radio will be offering a tiered roll out of the DRAWS product.

Individual components such as the DRAWS HAT, GPS LNA Antenna, Metal Case, Pre-loaded SD Card, will be available for purchase independently.  The initial offering will be only for the HAT and optional antenna.  Other offerings will roll out over the 4th quarter.

We will also offer a complete, assembled system with all components integrated in a single package.

We may also specific bundles (e.g. everything but the Raspberry Pi) as well.

Stay tuned.

I just read the Product Brief. What rigs use those 6-pin mini-DIN connectors? I'm thinking Yaesu FT-817 and newer? How about connecting it to an Elecraft KX3/PX3 system? Is it compatible?

Re: DRAWS

Hi Gwen,

This is a common interface across the big 3 amateur radio manufacturers that support a 'packet radio' accessory jack.  It should be plug compatible with many radios including the FT-8x7 and FT-818.  For radios without this connector, this is a classic '4-wire' interface; PTT, DISC or AFOUT, AFIN, and SQL (plus GND).  One would simply cut the 6 Pin Mini DIN cable in half and attach to the radio/connector of choice.

We will be building a database of radios along with level settings for setup.

Here's the start of a list of radios. Even after all these years -
the radio is still the big problem for ham data...

Having seen early slides at the NWAPRS SG presentation I will assume
9600 packet data is a design requirment.

I just discovered recently (Thank you Peter) that my IC-7000 has a compatible 6-pin mini-DIN connector. I tested it with FSQ-6 using my existing UDRC-II and it worked. Next to be tested is 9600 Packet Winlink using Dire Wolf.

Is this procedure still the current way to add UDRC packages to Raspbian?

  https://nw-digital-radio.groups.io/g/compass/wiki/Compass-Linux-Packages-on-Other-Debian-Based-Systems

Would this be compatible with releases of Raspbian newer than Jessie (i.e. Stretch), or is this a YMMV situation?

  Thanks

Re: Compass & DRAWS

The image for DRAWS will be based on this version of Compass and will be the best place to start, after the DRAWS image is released.  From that point forward you will be able to update Raaspbian packages directly,

Specs on DRAWS accessory port?

Steve Stroh

Could you provide more details on the accessory port of DRAWS such as whether the serial port is TTL levels or RS-232 levels (I’ll guess the former)?

And what are the specs of the analog input port?

Thanks!

Jeff,

Assuming that the DRAWS will operate similarly to the existing RPi/UDRC-II kit:

I know that there are many RPi/UDRC users who are using it for APRS running XASTIR. Personally, my primary interests are twofold:

1-     Running Fldigi in FSQ-6 mode and/or MT63 mode for local simplex digital comms.

2-     Running DireWolf to make the DRAWS into a network-attached TNC so that I can run RMS Express on my network-attached Windows PC.

Re: DRAWS

In addition to FSQ I plan to add in FT8Call as an option for my portable station.

It was reported to me that someone on the International D-STAR net said that the ThumbDV was going out of production.  THIS IS NOT TRUE.

The ThumbDV is on sale for $99.95 on existing stock. NW Digital Radio is continuing the ThumbDV.  See http://nwdigitalradio.com/thumbdv-clearance-sale/ for details.  If you miss the sale, there is no functional difference, but the new batch will be back at full price.

It is best to go the source for information.

Nice product, why not make the little unit compatible with other SBCs other than Rasberry Pi?  Maybe an added usb port to interface would make the unit interface with many SBCs and making sales go up even more?
