I’m eager to get mine as well, but it will arrive when it arrives. In meantime, I’ve been using the Draws image for raspberry pi, a usb soundcard, a usb gps and a k2 aprs cable and have got a working Fldigi and aprs station as well as JS8Call. Working on getting winlink working next. Have participated in a few FSQ nets as well.

Really appreciate the product, which is just software so far. And can’t wait to get the hardware.

You met Tak this weekend. I’ve been banging my head to get paclink-Unix to work on my Pi. It looks like I need a draws hat or the whole workstation to make this work. I’ll be picking your brain on getting the pi working. There’s a couple of use who have ordered the Draws workstation. I know it’s a trip to come to Metrotown Mall. We hang out drinking coffee work on the pi’s and promote different digital modes like Fldigi FSQ.

Feel free to pick away Don.  I will try to make it out to Metrotown Mall, though it won’t be for a few weekends now.  I’ll let you know how I make out getting WinLink working with my current setup.  I’m brand new to WinLink, so there’s a learning curve of what is WinLink to get over as well as how to get it going on the Pi.

I have been making notes on how to configure my current setup (with out the Draws Hardware, but with the Draws Software).  I also have not got it working with Tak’s Vox Box yet, but that is because I’m missing a TRRS cable. Should arrive from Amazon today or tomorrow and then I should be able to use my base station.  Once I’ve got some repeatable notes on setting this up, I’ll share them with you and come out share my findings.

I'm the sysop for va7tsa in Abbotsford, BC. I'm looking for something that will do what Paclink does for windows in the Winlink programs. BPQ, Pat Io does not do tactical call. So someone come in with their personal will not have it set up to connect their mail program to the IP address: using port 25 and 110. Thunderbird seems to be the only program to work. I hoping some smart young Linux guru can figure this issue out. The PI can run as an interface and send webmail using a tactical call to the Winlink Gateway. 9 positions in an EOC using the base call of the Gateway.

Hope to meet up, Chuck va7ul and I have the Draws, va7bwx and Chuck know Linux but have not used it with ham radio.  Learning about the Draws will be my main focus when it gets here.
 sorry for the local OT

It’s not uncommon for other hats, shields, etc to come by themselves, no hardware included. If you’re going to own more than one pi, i’d Recommend getting a set of 2.5 mm standoffs on eBay. 250 pieces in a tackle box is $10 shipped. Just don’t buy from a seller named “tryggin”

First, thanks to everyone for helping.  I may be missing something.  I keep getting the same read only errors whether or not the card is in the locked position.

Sunday night and last night i used diskimager, for some reason it didn't work.  After attempting to boot the pi on sunday and nothing happening, i check the card on the pc, it had nothing on it and said it was empty.  I tried again last night, and still nothing.  The card is a pny 32gb micro sdhc card and looks to be a class 1 card.  I formatted to fat 32 before writing the image to the card.  I used the same computer as when i first wrote the raspbian.

I'm thinking its possibly the card or maybe even the user.

Re: Installing draws image

Douglas,

A few points:
  • If you are burning the SDCARD from Windows or MacOS, use Etcher. It works really well on those platforms (As well as some Intel/AMD Linux platforms).
  • You do not need to pre-format the SDCARD, the image overwrites the formatting anyway, just use a raw card or understand that you are overwriting sector by sector new partitions and filesystems.
  • Generally, we recommend a CLASS 10 or better SDCARD.  Lower class ones will usually work, but they are more likely to fail as they are really designed for lower duty cycles (and they are often faster as well).
It does sound like you may have a defective card, it is hard to say.  Many of the image writing programs have the ability to verify the writes.  Also, since the partitions/filesystem (except /boot) are foreign to Windows and MacOS, you probably won't see them from your PC/Mac.

Douglas,

It sounds like you're trying to write the image from your Pi?

Can you issue an `lsblk` command and tell us anything useful about the drives it shows that you know? (like which ones you don't want to overwrite for example)

From there we can help you construct a command that should work to burn the image.

Failing that, etcher on a "real" computer is your best bet.

Re: [udrc] My DRAWS arrived, video inside

Justin,

This is an application specific question.  The DRAWS™ HAT is hardware that can provide access to lots of different applications in a high functionality package.  If the application being used has features for the vision impaired, or if the applications work well with a screen reader, then DRAWS™ can be a part of a solution for a blind amateur radio operator.
