Raspbian runs Avahi services, which means the computer can be discovered automatically using the Zeroconf system (Bonjour, Avahi, etc.) If your raspberry pi is named DRAWS-CALLSIGN, then you should be able to access it from other machines like this ssh draws-callsign.local or http://draws-callsign.local:8080 as long as the computers are on the same LAN. Bonjour is built into most Apple products, Avahi/Zeroconf in many Linux/Android systems. If your Windows box doesn't have it, install iTunes.

I also haven't figured out yet (due to lack of time on the clock) what the best state for the RPi to be in with regard to internet connectivity. Much of my operating will be done somewhere there's a cell signal, and i can use my phone/tablet as an access point - which would get connectivity to the Pi.
I haven't yet but was going to look into how to get location data from the phone rather than the GPS. Or should i scratch all that and treat the Pi as a disconnected device except when i'm at home? I could run a piece of ethernet to it but i've been trying to decrease the amount of wiring i've got running around my radio. The way you suggest though Jim would work for what i'm trying to do. I think i can also have the Pi connect to my home wifi and offer up a different SID for me to connect to it - like you do. I'll look into that as well. I'll also check out 44 net VPN - thanks for that suggestion Bill

What the configuration to do you use when you're out in the field and want a reliable connection to it via VNC/ssh?That would be a use case for a 44 net VPN.

I do the opposite actually. My raspberry pi’s connect to my home network via Ethernet, which I statically map with dhcp and then I set the WiFi on the pi up to be an access point using dnsmasq and hostapd. Then when I’m in the field, I connect to my pi’s WiFi and use VNC or ssh or whatever. I’m just in the middle of configuring a pi with the new Draws_10 image and I do have some notes I could share if interested. Jim

RPi / DRAWs Connectivity in the Field and at Home

This is probably more of a RaspberryPI question than it is a DRAWs specific question but i think this is likely a pretty common use case amongst DRAWs users.
I use my RPi/DRAWs at home and outside (remote). At home i have it join my home wifi on boot, i have a static IP address assigned to it at startup via DHCP and a DNS name assigned to that static IP. I connect to it via VNC or ssh/terminal. It works great. What the configuration to do you use when you're out in the field and want a reliable connection to it via VNC/ssh? I'm assuming setting it up as an access point and connecting to that access point with your tablet laptop, and then to the RPi via VNC? Similar to this (either bridged, or just a standalone access point)? Does anyone have guidance on the "ideal" or most reliable way to do this for radio use?

Re: [udrc] My DRAWS arrived, video inside
Justin, This is an application specific question. The DRAWS™ HAT is hardware that can provide access to lots of different applications in a high functionality package. If the application being used has features for the vision impaired, or if the applications work well with a screen reader, then DRAWS™ can be a part of a solution for a blind amateur radio operator.

The wiki page is worth 30 words (I counted)... and a picture is worth 1000 words so they say, then this video must be worth at least 1030 words. So here are my 1030 words on the subject. I go over receiving the board and burning the image from the command line and also from the GUI using etcher. Stay Tuned for more! - Steve, KM9G

Re: Installing draws image
Steve McGrane <temporarilyoffline@...>
Douglas, It sounds like you're trying to write the image from your Pi? Can you issue an `lsblk` command and tell us anything useful about the drives it shows that you know? (like which ones you don't want to overwrite for example) From there we can help you construct a command that should work to burn the image. Failing that, etcher on a "real" computer is your best bet. - Steve

Re: Installing draws image
Douglas, A few points:
It does sound like you may have a defective card, it is hard to say. Many of the image writing programs have the ability to verify the writes. Also, since the partitions/filesystem (except /boot) are foreign to Windows and MacOS, you probably won't see them from your PC/Mac.

First, thanks to everyone for helping. I may be missing something. I keep getting the same read only errors whether or not the card is in the locked position.
Sunday night and last night i used diskimager, for some reason it didn't work. After attempting to boot the pi on sunday and nothing happening, i check the card on the pc, it had nothing on it and said it was empty. I tried again last night, and still nothing. The card is a pny 32gb micro sdhc card and looks to be a class 1 card. I formatted to fat 32 before writing the image to the card. I used the same computer as when i first wrote the raspbian. I'm thinking its possibly the card or maybe even the user.

It’s not uncommon for other hats, shields, etc to come by themselves, no hardware included. If you’re going to own more than one pi, i’d Recommend getting a set of 2.5 mm standoffs on eBay. 250 pieces in a tackle box is $10 shipped. Just don’t buy from a seller named “tryggin”

I'm the sysop for va7tsa in Abbotsford, BC. I'm looking for something that will do what Paclink does for windows in the Winlink programs. BPQ, Pat Io does not do tactical call. So someone come in with their personal will not have it set up to connect their mail program to the IP address: using port 25 and 110. Thunderbird seems to be the only program to work. I hoping some smart young Linux guru can figure this issue out. The PI can run as an interface and send webmail using a tactical call to the Winlink Gateway. 9 positions in an EOC using the base call of the Gateway. Hope to meet up, Chuck va7ul and I have the Draws, va7bwx and Chuck know Linux but have not used it with ham radio. Learning about the Draws will be my main focus when it gets here. sorry for the local OT 73

Feel free to pick away Don. I will try to make it out to Metrotown Mall, though it won’t be for a few weekends now. I’ll let you know how I make out getting WinLink working with my current setup. I’m brand new to WinLink, so there’s a learning curve of what is WinLink to get over as well as how to get it going on the Pi.

I have been making notes on how to configure my current setup (with out the Draws Hardware, but with the Draws Software). I also have not got it working with Tak’s Vox Box yet, but that is because I’m missing a TRRS cable. Should arrive from Amazon today or tomorrow and then I should be able to use my base station. Once I’ve got some repeatable notes on setting this up, I’ll share them with you and come out share my findings. 73 Jim va7shg
