My guess is you’ve got the PTT configuration incorrect. Some of the apps I checked had it defaulted to VOX mode, once I changed to CAT it worked fine (you could also configure your radio to accept VOX too if that’s an option)

it sounds like otherwise everything’s working. I bet it’s that or something related.

EDIT: do you just have audio? Or do you have a rig control serial/usb cable connected? If you only have audio you’ll have to see if VOX is an option

I primarily want to monitor the radio and its APRS function.  I would like to access the APRS Log and be able to change APRS parameter to include
the embedded greeting message.  I do not want it to anything more on 2 2 meters.  Now HF may be something else.  For example, I would like to do RTTY with it.

What do you want to do with the D710G? If you want to run APRS you don't need to do anything, just plug your weather station into the radio, configure APRS in the D710 menus and you're rolling, no PI required. 

If you want to run echolink, or another digital mode with the radio, then setting it up with DRAWs is a good option. You'll need the right wire from the kenwood round serial connector -> DB9 -> USB, or one that goes direct from the round connector to USB.

You'd use the RPi to control the radio via USB and connect the "DATA" port from the kenwood to the DRAWs. Then i think any of the digital mode apps would be an option providing there are other users on 2m/440.

If i'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do let me know.

You'll probably want to hear from someone who's doing this but i think if you want to do that you'll want to use Xastir - which is part of the DRAWs image i think. but to monitor the APRS packets i think you'll essentially be using the DRAWs to do APRS and effectively bypassing the TNC on your D710.

If that's actually the case you could probably use any 2m radio with sufficient power output. Curious to see how you get it sorted out.

Howdy all,
Here's an update. I received my pi3B+ and hooked up my draw hat. I did not use the 12 volt power I used the Pi power instead. I have a working Xastir station now. So not sure if I really did any damage when trying on my pidrive. I just don't know what the smoke was from and I am gun shy now of trying the 12 volt input again. I really want to but I really wanted to play first. I'm using a Yeasu ft-847 as I want to try the ft8 digital format. I left the new pi and draws hat powered up overnight with the radio turned off just in case. All seems well today. More to come.

I've got this working, it does exactly what i was looking for. It will join my home Wifi when i'm at home, and if my home wifi is unavailable (eg: i'm out somewhere) it'll configure a static IP address on the RPi wlan0 interface, fire up a hotspot and i can connect to that from my computer/tablet/phone and use the Rpi as a standalone device.

Here's the link i ended up following.

It's a little bit fiddly in that it seems to take a while to bring up the access point after reboot. I was debugging the autohotspot script and all i can see is that it fails while provisioning the interface due to device busy, but then after ~2 minutes it works (i run the pi headless so am looking at the logs after the fact.

SSid's in range:  ++ iw dev wlan0 scan ap-force ++ egrep '^BSS|SSID:' command failed: Device or resource busy (-16)

The next thing i'm going to mess around with is if i can get it to join the "personal hotspot" from my phone/tablet and let me connect to it and have internet access from the RPi while i'm not at home.

The RTC is an integrated part of the GPS and not addressed separately.

The battery is to preserve values when power is removed. The battery can provide a cumalative 40 days of backup power before replacement.

nwdigital radio customer service rocks. Here's an update. I got the confidence boost I needed from NWdigital Radio and plugged the 12 volts in. My Draws Hat is working and there seems to be no problems. It is up on aprs again. I plan and running it for the next week on aprs  them try some HF. If all goes well I will then try my PiDrive, as I see others had the same idea. I hope I did not scare anyone away for experimenting. It is the hobbies way to experiment. Anyway I'm really diggin' this toy and look forward to doing alot with it. I currenly running a Ultimeter 2100 on the pi with draws hat connected to my 847. It is up on cwop and aprs.fi

I burned the image to a chip, booted the pi/draws hat and had no trouble following the update instructions to update the software/system.
I am using a monitor, keyboard and mouse directly connected to the pi.
I have been able to get my ICOM IC-7300 and pi to talk together and pass audio both ways using the IC-7300 USB connector plugged into the pi.  I have tried and configured all of the non packet modes with success!
[Not being particularly savy with the pi or my new IC-7300, I am quite prowd that I have been able to get this far :)]

The one BIG issue that I am having is using fldigi - the main reason that I got the draws hat:

I have it working and communicating via the USB like the other software.  The issue is that fldigi will load and run perfectly for only a few minutes, then without changing anything on the radio or pi, the waterfall will start to pause/stutter, getting worse as the minutes go by until the program will ultimately freeze requiring a reboot.  Not even taskmanager is able to kill it every time.

The drop down menus will sometimes work for a bit before the program ultimately crashes.

When I frist got fldigi working, I made several contacts on PSK31 and CW, but then it started acting up and getting flaky.  I had been using a 2.5A 5V wall wart to power the pi/draws and thought that it may have been the power, so I connected the 12V hat leads to my 12V supply with no change in the behavior of fldigi.  The other software all seem to continue to work fine.

Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!  [I'm DYING to try some of the other digital modes and see if I can get WEFAX images and SSTV!!]

Congrats on getting through the setup portion!

Sounds like you're only connecting through USB?

If you're not connecting through the ports on the draws to the radio, then it wouldn't be a draws problem.

Can you connect your draws hat to your radio through one of the 6-pin ports and use the draws audio ports without it freezing?

Trying to get WSJT-X working for the next video. Details First, Questions at the end.

Radio: Yaesu FT-891
CAT control works over USB
Radio connected via LEFT Audio port (closest to GPS port)
RIGHT Audio port disabled via DRAWS Manager
I’ve ran `sudo bin/setalsa-ft817.sh`

Audio Input of `sysdefault:CARD=udrc/Mono` works fine and I’m decoding signals

I am unable to find an audio output setting that does anything.  Valid choices are:

default
sysdefault:card=alsa
sysdefault:card=udrc
hw:card=alsa,dev=0
plughw:card=alsa,dev=0
plughw:card=alsa,dev=1
plughw:card=udrc,dev=0

This radio works fine with a separate signalink and linux PC.

The FT-891 manuals do not specify what the “Peak to Peak Input Voltage” is, so I can not complete the calculations.

It appears that when the software triggers the PTT, that ambient shack noise is being transmitted instead of the audio/data stream from the DRAWS. (I can't whistle FT8 yet, but I'm getting close)

I have not pulled out pin 6 yet, the prev thread with Julian didn’t conclude if that was necessary or not.

Questions:
  1. What is the Peak to Peak Input Voltage of the FT-891
  2. What is the proper sound output device
  3. Any suggestions for what might be missing or what to try next?

I am only connecting through the USB port and that works great with all the other software.  Fldigi is the only one that freezes after working fine for a few minutes.

Something you could try to narrow it down - although i doubt it'll show much - is to disconnect the radio from the pi, run fldigi for a period of time and see if it goes unresponsive, and then depending on what happens, remove the DRAWs hat from the pi and try running fldigi with and without the radio connected.

What version of fldigi are you using and which raspberry pi are you using? I've got 4.1.01 on mine - which appears to be the latest, i'm pretty sure i've updated it since i burned the disk image though.

I ran a late night dist-upgrade last night on my card running the draws image (i know, i know)

Everything appears to work correctly except each of the programs that use audio are complaining of no input audio. When i navigate into the settings input and output audio are both blank. I can select output audio (plugw:CARD=ALSA,DEV=0) but the dropdown for input audio isn't populated with anything. CAT control, and everything else, seems to work fine.

I'm running at FT-891 connected via USB and DRAWs audio. The Rpi is a 3b+

I'm going to do some more troubleshooting later tonight, i figured i'd post this here in case it's a softball for anyone.
