+1 for that Alex. If you have a case with power pole out the back and GPS out the side I want one!

Alex,

Nice design.

Did you have one for the original DRAWS with the GPS port in the side and the power out of the end?
I would be very interested in checking that out if you had it.

I have aded a new case design for the DRAWS Hat (Jun-2019 edition with the GPS SMA port at the back.

I may look at adding power poles to it, probably as a replacement lid design.

Compact GPS antenna? #draws #gps

Chris Metcalf

Taking my DRAWS on the road for the first time this weekend, and I was thinking it'd be nice to have a compact GPS antenna to save myself from having to cart the antenna and long feed line I use at home with me, at least when I'm operating out doors.

Anybody got a recommendation on an antenna they've had good experiences with?

Thanks,
Chris

Search for a Taoglas TG.08. It's passive, so you may need to make sure you have good LOS to the sky, but at least the antenna doesn't have a long whip on it.

Here is a link to the "OLD" design by N0KZ.  I haven't built it but it looks right.

Re: New 3D print case design for DRAWS #draws #case

There may be thermal considerations for a Rpi 4 -- so report back when you try one.  Metal cases are better than acrylic or plastic for helping dissipating heat.

We don't have numbers, but reports are that the 4 runs warmer than the 3.

The Pi 4 version as well as an Anderson Plug version are now updated in the same thingiverse entry.
Personally i’m not updating my DRAWS to the new Pi 4 for some time, don’t really need it yet and I think there is some settling of the kernel and other bits, the same issue arose when the 3B+ was first introduced.
Temperature, under “normal” use I haven’t hit any problems with thermals yet, however I am trying to design something to let a fan operate, unfortunately the design of the board, with connectors on all sides, makes this difficult.

Absolutely.

I'm still holding tight for the metal case I ordered.

Rpi slow with draws hat

Christopher Warren

Ever since I installed  my Draws hat the RPI 3b+ slowed down and it takes ages to boot and to shutdown. During booting the CPU % reaches 100% before recovering.

Yesterday I was using fldigi and during transmitting the text actually paused for a while and then  continued.  This also occurred during receiving with lost characters.
Has anyone experienced this?

Draws hat two weeks old defective

Michael Narges

I received the Draws on or about June 28.  It performed flawlessly until a couple days ago.
After using it till about midnight, I discovered that it was essentially dead the next morning.
Draws-Manager said it could not be found. There was zero audio to my Ft818.  The gps no longer
functioned in gpsmon or cgps, including a myriad of other issues.  Pi continued to perform fine.
I hooked up the Signalink and was able to work as before. I vbelieve that the board has quit.
I sent a message via the NW Digital site and no response. Please exchange this board for a working replacement.
Please advise.

Sincerely,

Mike Narges WF8O

https://hammadeparts.com/ is a great place to get your cables. Yes, that means shipping from the US to the UK.

You fellow UK compatriots make know of a source in county.

Re: Pi ft817 help please

You want two leads. The mini-DIN 6 cable that comes with the DRAWS™ HAT (or any similar cable) and a CT-62 equivalent cable for CAT control. (many offered on eBay and Amazon).

Go into the UDRC and DRAWS ™ subgroup to this forum for help and advice.

Hi Andrew,

Please take a look at: http://nwdigitalradio.com/draws/

Good explanation and starting point.

The DRAWS + RPi combo works well with my FT-817.
