WL2K Client
"marklfriedlander" <marklfriedlander@...>
I have some questions about Winlink on the UDR56K.
1) Is the UDR56K capable of performing as a Winlink 2000 UHF client without the need to add a soundcard or TNC? 2) Does the Linux implementation of the WL2K software on the UDR56K include WINMOR? If so, can the UDR56K be interfaced via a USB port to an external sound device (such as a Signalink) connected to an HF radio? Thanks, Mark KV4I

Use a couple of good UHF bandpass cavities, at least 4" diameter in series with the UDR56K to the antenna. Tune them to the simplex frequency that you will be using. This will protect most problems for both your receive as well as transmit and others on the site. John Lloyd, K7JL Tom Hayward wrote:

bother anyone with intermodulation interference. Would still need to convince the site manager of this. Tom KD7LXL

These filters are also available as a single bandpass (with several cavities

in a row) ... so ... would that prevent other transmitter signals from coming down back in the pa??? (isolator would help ... just asking if such a bandpass would also help??) Dg9bfc Sigi

The UDR56K is half-duplex so I don't need to worry about desensing the receiver during transmit. And all the other receivers on the site have bandpass filters so that is not an issue. The problem I am trying to prevent is signals from nearby transmitters mixing in the final amplifier of the UDR56K and causing intermodulation interference. This is accomplished by using an isolator/circulator to send any signal coming down the antenna into a dummy load before it reaches the UDR's amplifier. Every isolator/circulator I am familiar with has a very narrow bandwidth, so by implementing this technique I would sacrifice the frequency agility of the UDR56K, the integral feature of "A Hailing Channel for Packet Radio". Repeater builders use a highpass lowpass combination (procom 70/6 or

similar) to transmit and receive on the same antenna ... now my rough guess is that you could add such a filter to your antenna input and can transmit on one frequency without desensing on the other frequency Dg9bfc Sigi

Hailing channel and intermodulation suppression
Tom Hayward <esarfl@...>
I'm trying to embrace the concept of A Hailing Channel for Packet
Radio, but I've run into an engineering roadblock. I am assuming the "hailing channel" will be something like 440.800 MHz APRS, and the 56k data transfer channel will be 430.9 MHz. These are 10 MHz apart. How can I support this on a crowded site that requires a [normally low bandwidth] intermodulation suppression panel (isolator / low pass filter)? With the independent TX/RX connector option, is the internal TX/RX relay preserved? I'd hate to try to implement an external TX/RX relay with <10ms turnaround time. Tom KD7LXL

It would be very nice to visit in
person with a bunch of people at DCC in September. Even better
if we have UDRs then. That will be an outstanding environment for
ideas, experimentation, and such. 73-KY9K/Brian

Don't want to wait until September? How about Salmoncon in July? What regional gatherings would make sense in your area for next year orNWAPRS Gathering, weekend after Labor Day each year, North Bend, WA. UDR56K isn't QRP but this is the techiest bunch I know of in the PNW and I'm sure they'd enjoy learning about the new radio and technology involved. http://valleycamp.org/page/salmoncon Bill, WA7NWP

What can you do if you have the only UDR56k-4 in the neighborhood?
UDR-Expedition! Love the idea! Regional get togethers make a lot of sense. The NW Digital Radio team would love to participate.
SEA-PAC is the ARRL NW Division Convention held annually in Seaside, OR in early June. How many of you would attend a Friday seminar and configuration/experimentation party in 2014? [Seaside is a great place to bring the whole family, my wife doesn't usually attend the convention but anticipates going every year.]
Our next big event where you can come visit in person with the team behind UDR56k-4 is DCC in Seattle in September. What regional gatherings would make sense in your area for next year or beyond? We can't attend everything in person, but are interested in meeting you!

At least you've got one guy.. I've got no guy.. So I either have to buy two to experiment with or hard recruit at least that one guy in my RF area.

Of course.. This could be the time to suggest a UDR56K-4 conference somewhere. Everyone bring their UDR's and we can spend the weekend testing/experimenting.. UDR-Expedition!! --73

The only real reason I didn't signup for a pre-order is because I need to convince one of my ham buddies to buy one. I took a look at the map (a good idea by the way) and there is only one guy in my state.

Does seem more than reasonable to wait till the units are shipping. It can cause a fair amount of FUD if you start talking too much about a product that hasn't been released yet :).
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
But given that, I'd 2nd the call for a Youtube demo by someone who knows the ins and outs of the design. Demo setup of two units into dummy loads and make them talk. Watch it on a spectrum analyzer + analog-audio (buzz, buzz). Make it pretty :). Reason being is from the press coverage of this radio, I blew it off as a yet another TNC bolted to a radio. Wasn't until the MicroHams conference where I talked to people 'in the know' and realized this was the digital experimenter's 70CM dream rig...I could get my hands in there and build on it. I pre-ordered 2 on the spot :). Now many want a plug-and-play box, and I want an experimenter rig, and I realize we're different audiences (and one's bigger than the other, hehe). But telling everyone exactly what it is and isn't never hurts :). Michael

Hi Doug,

Thanks for spreading the word. The purpose of the pre-order discount is to incentivize those individuals who are willing to work with a new unproven product (early adopters) and contribute to it's development. It's perfectly reasonable and expected that there will be a second wave (pragmatists) who get on board once the product has been proven. It's in all of our best interest not to rush the decision-making process and thanks again for your support. Bryan Reference: "Crossing the Chasm" by Gordon Moore, 1991

valuable!! My concern now is that the $AU value has dropped against the greenback in the last month! A few months ago the $AU bought around US$1.05 (-: ... now it's at US$0.94 )-: !! I hope it doesn't drop too much more! 73 Michael VK5ZEA

I still have a couple Kantronics D4-10 data radios (12 watt), but those radios had a bad oscillator design, as they drifted all over the place. Work fine in a heated room, but at a tower site they need to be temperature controlled somehow.

Hopefully this radio will have a TCXO onboard.
