Great news. It seems that having all six pins connected makes the 817 unhappy. Basil said they know the problem now and will look for a solution. And having told you how successful I was, now I cannot seem to be able to turn Direwolf and ax25 off so that ft8 and js8call can have access to the sound card on the draws. I did it before and now it doesnt work. Do you use Basil's script? cd cd bin sudo su ./ax25-stop If you do, do you get a response from the pi. Like "ax25 has stopped". I get no response. Bob ve3obo I am very pleased to have helped in some small way because you have helped me a great deal in the construction of my portable station. Just wish I could afford that 120w solar panel.

Hi Joe,
You have a radio I do not know anything about. I’m only about a week ahead of you in learning how to make DRAWS sing. I just happened to have been working with fldigi and my IC-7000 and the questions you asked were central to making fldigi work with the DRAWS hat audio device and that rig.
How did you configure fldigi to key your radio? Since you are no longer using a SignaLink, you can’t rely on the SL VOX keying circuit. If you want to use VOX for PTT, the radio has to have a VOX function and it has to be set up and adjusted.
Only other approach I can think of is to make sure your radio can be controlled and/or keyed by flrig’s CAT control and set it up. Then set fldigi to control and key the radio using flrig. That seemed to work for me with my IC-7000 and Yaesu FT-817.
Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

I noticed right of the bat that the squelch on my radio does not stop the waterfall with the DRAWS interface...what is that about? Using the alsa mixer control no value of ADC changes the waterfall appearance, it doesn't dim or get brighter with open squelch. Squelching off the signal of the radio does not stop the water fall ??? I have never seen that before. Lastly I cant key the radio and no value of Lo Drive Gain or PCM makes any difference. Basil,
Thank you for the update on the 891. I only operate HF portable, so I connected the dummy load and corrected to: " If your radio is set for DATA (PSK) operation use ALSA settings IN2_L & IN2_R. Turn OFF IN1_L & IN1_R " There was an immediate improvement seen on the waterfall for fldigi. Hopefully I'll be able to test in the field tomorrow. Todd / N6XDX

Thanks, Indeed ax25 was not shut down I ran ./ax25-stop after ./ax25-disable and that did the trick. In the fldigi set up port audio lite up and I was able to select hw udrc 0.0 for capture and play back. I will let you know how I make out getting audio levels right for my TM-V71. Thanks, Joe K3JV

A couple of thoughts on
#applications
#beta
#image
#draws
#support
I would just like to take few minutes to thank everyone for their testing and feedback on the images that we have for the DRAWS™ HAT.
We have key people at NW Digital Radio all looking at the feedback and trying to characterize how to provide quicker success for those trying various modes. This includes Bryan, Basil, Anna, and myself.
I feel it is important to remember that we don't have every radio in the market, so our focus is on the proper settings for 'classes' of radio and applications.
We have several hundred UDRC/UDRC-II boards in the field. The DRAWS™ sound chip and driver is the same as the UDRC/UDRC-II and we have users of those boards who have been successful with a variety of radios and applications. We are collecting feedback and will put it back out in a more organized fashion as we are able. The beta image is put together as a starting point for operation of your DRAWS™ HAT. It includes programs that are popular in the community and have worked with the UDRC/UDRC-II/DRAWS™ sound subsystem. Interfacing the HAT to a given radio starts with a 'standard' DIN-6 interface as found in the packet radio world. However, there are settings both for the HAT and the radio, as well as proper wiring that must be considered and optimized at the station level. For example Yaesu mutes the speaker if the SQL line from the HAT is at a given level. Also, there are two different pins to receive audio from the radio into the HAT, and depending on the radio and mode they may need to be selected, and have levels set, differently. Also, some radios have internal settings for incoming levels from the HAT to the radio (e.g. FT-817 PKT MIC level), that must be matched to the output of the HAT.
We, at NW Digital Radio, are grateful for offers of documentation assistance, offers to loan equipment, and sharing of discoveries. We will incorporate such findings into documentation for users of the DRAWS™ system. We are hopeful that this community will be able to become a great resource for one another via our open communication and transparency in responding to support requests. Just a few reminders:
Enjoy your holiday celebrations and know that we are working on DRAWS™ even as we celebrate outs.

First of all, thanks for all the time you are putting in.
See suggestion for PCM, LO Drive gain below. Tried to take a scientific/stepwise approach with setting the DRAWS boardCheck this out by John Ackermann N8UR Look for: "The No-Test-Equipment Packet Adjustment System" https://www.febo.com/packet/layer-one/transmit.html Do you have a handy talky? use the measure_deviate script: n7nix/deviation/measure_deviate.sh Pick a tone, bring-up alsamixer Set PCM to 0db & drop LO Drive until there is no clipping ie. no distortion or just follow John Ackermann's suggestion. UHF - have not tried anything yet. TBDI don't have an answer but your description is a good data point. Here are my current alsamixer settings:So PCM set that low is very suspicious. It means you are not using many bits of the CODEC. I would play with returning PCM at least close to zero & dropping LO Driver Gain down. I am stuck until I can figure out how to coerce wsjt-x into transmitting atYep. I understand. Thanks for thinking this through with me.Thanks for taking such a methodical approach. KD4IZ

Basil and All,
Tried to take a scientific/stepwise approach with setting the DRAWS board audio out today.
I went through the entire level and deviation check routine again today and wound up with very similar settings to my previous attempts. I then tested direwolf VHF-FM first and then after disabling AX25, fldigi and wsjt-x on HF. Results “ain’t purty”, but at least everything is being consistent.
Software function status: VHF - with direwolf/Xastir transmitting and receiving on the local packet network does work . Comment: I don't really have a an easy/better way to test than function on APRS network locally. I have a sense that the audio may be high, but I won’t know until I have time to putter with Spectrum Lab. It will become my "Deviation Meter" with an IC-7100 functioning as my "sensor".
UHF - have not tried anything yet. TBD
HF - With the alsamixer settings below (visually they produce the "lowest splatter" per an IC-7300 panscope and using Spectrum Lab 2 with the IC-7300 internal audio subsystem via USB. Rig coax is grounded, RF gain at 20% with 20dB of attenuation:
1. Fldigi drives the IC-7000 up to full power (if set) but transmits a very dirty sig at any power above 5%. Comment: The sig can be copied by others, but the ALC bar is reading 60%. Not making any friends in the PSK world. These are ALC symptoms. Reducing either the PCM level or LO Driver Gain results in very much increased noise and a feedback like whistle at a different freq. Increasing the two settings results in more splatter and harmonics.
2. WSJT-x receives just fine but DRAWS produces only an extremely low transmit audio level according to the IC-7000 and signal being received on other transceivers. Only testing with FT8 no other JT modes tested. TBD: wspr. Comment: In transmit there is no Power Out deflection on the IC-7000 - even if I adjust the PCM and IO Driver levels to the max, together or separate. So the PCM/LO Driver Gain level settings that “work” in fldigi, don’t work in wsjt-x. I even went back to check that invoking wsjt-x did not somehow tweak the alsamixer settings… they remained the same.
Key Question: Why is DRAWS overdriving in fldigi, and then not putting out enough audio level to drive the IC-7000 to set power level in wjst-x FT8 mode with alsamixer settings remaining the same between apps?
Here are my current alsamixer settings: PCM L:[-21.50dB], R:[-21.50dB ADC Level L:[-2.00dB], R:[-2.00dB] LO Driver Gain L:[6.00dB], R:[6.00dB] IN1 L:[10kOhm], R:[10kOhm] IN2 L:[Off], R:[Off]
I am stuck until I can figure out how to coerce wsjt-x into transmitting at set power with the same audio input levels to the rig as provided in fldigi. At this point I don’t even care if the overdrive issue isn’t solved. I have decided to put the FT-817 aside because other are working/reporting on it. I am only testing with the Beta 5 provided software and the IC-7000 until I get these critical pieces working reliably because that will be my main radio for this DRAWS kit.
Now need to go pay attention to other stuff (like family and the local zoo of 4-legged furries we keep here on the farm).
Thanks for thinking this through with me… KD4IZ Jack Spitznagel FM19oo

Thanks Jack Would love to have a sked with you, perhaps during winter field day!? Yeah, regarding the DRAWS, I know my post was a little harsh, but I find leaving out the diplomacy puts everybody on the same page. It also gives confidence to others to come out and say they're having a problem as well. So, based on the comments on the two videos and the blog, I had hoped on getting the "getting started" video up after xmas. Lots of operators are counting on it for the HF digital side. I'm kind of feeling like I let them down. Let's see what the NWDR team says about a wiki. I think it's critical, and worth it, even if it delays the end result. I'm also willing to contribute to it. Julian,
Good to hear you say this on two levels. “We Are Not Alone” and more importantly, “It Can Work”.
I am “itching” to move on to playing with DV mode (HF and V/UHF) stuff, but that will have to wait.
As you can tell from my emails, I write a lot – and would be happy to help with the “Getting Started with DRAWS” Wiki. If conditions get good enough, would also enjoy helping with a sked for your video clips.
The promise of this little beast is enough to make me think of it like I do Arduinos, RPis, and MMDVM boards, one is not enough! And of course I will need a spare one to experiment with. 8^)
