Re: Cant turn off direwolf and ax25

Bernard f6bvp / ai7bg

I noticed that killing direwolf on Compass Linux beta 1.5,  ax.25 interface udr0 and udr1 are removed freeing access to draws sound card.

sudo killall direwolf

is a quite simple command indeed.

I entered

cd bin
sudo su
./ax25-stop

The pi returns the command prompt but not anything like "ax25 has stopped".
I see the correct sound card input and output codec in the settings for these programs (ft8 and js8call) but no audio from the ft817 radio. I had this working before. What am I missing?

Re: amixer questions Re: Set Up Issues

Joseph Vilardo <jvilardo@...>

Merry Christmas Julian

All of the adjustment I made to the receive signal was through the ADC Level of the alsa mixer. FLDIGI has a go no go "diamond shaped" icon on the bottom tool bar of the main screen.   It lights up "black" for low receive audio, "Green" for ok and "Red" for over driven receive. The ADC Level adjustment got the green diamond to light with plenty of room to spare.

Now select fldigi from the "internet menu" on the home screen and you should be able to go to the "configure" menu of fldigi then sound card and select "port audio" in the drop down menu you should see the selection for "udrc". If you dont it either means you have not shut down ax25 or you didn't comment out dtparam=audio=on or hdmi_drive=2

Also from the home screen of pi go to preferences and bring up "Audio Device Settings" and setup PCM, ADC Level and LO Driver Gain.

I found that setting the audio out (Transmit) levels where easy to adjust to -20db using the alsa mixer controls of PCM and Lo Driver Gain. I use  a free audio spectrum analyzer called "Spectrum Lab ver 2.93" for setting the audio drive level on fldigi for FM vhf and uhf.  For HF the best thing is to adjust the xmit drive level so you have NO ALC showing for ssb transmit. The signals sound clean on second TM V71 I have. Also the receive gain was easy to adjust to keep the  audio within range of the green indicator diamond on fldigi.

I had not experienced the issues that people were having with FT817 at Ft 891 ?? but I had not tried fldigi with the beta 5 version of the image. Beta 6 seems to work just fine with  the Kenwood TM V71.

How did you configure fldigi to key your radio? Since you are no longer using a SignaLink, you can’t rely on the SL VOX keying circuit.  If you want to use VOX for PTT, the radio has to have a VOX function and it has to be set up and adjusted.

Only other approach I can think of is to make sure your radio can be controlled and/or keyed by flrig’s CAT control and set it up. Then set fldigi to control and key the radio using flrig. That seemed to work for me with my IC-7000 and Yaesu FT-817.

Next issue is with getting the radio to transmit. First off, I have used Fldigi with the TM-V71 many times on vhf uhf with success using a signalink and a sound cards with simple interfaces. I noticed right of the bat that the squelch on my radio does not stop the waterfall with the DRAWS interface...what is that about? Using the alsa mixer control no value of ADC changes the waterfall appearance, it doesn't dim or get brighter with open squelch. Squelching off the signal of the radio does not stop the water fall ??? I have never seen that before. Lastly I cant key the radio and no value of Lo Drive Gain or PCM makes any difference.

Do you have any suggestions ???

Bob,

That is a mistake I often make when I forget and reflexively try to use DOS/Windows conventions in LINUX. It is confusing.

You want to be in “~/bin”, not “/bin”. note the “~”!

In the DOS/Windows world that would be the same as saying “cd \home\pi\bin”.

This is the bin folder in your user account “home” directory. You will find show

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

1. Check to make absolutely sure that Direwolf is not running after your reboot.
2. If it is not running, you should see PortAudio as a selectable option. Check the box.
3. Now Select udrc: - (hw:0,0) for both capture and playback.
4. You can also check “Device supports fell duplex” (it is in mine by default and I just left it that way)

Hope that helped.

I am looking for some basic guidance on getting fldigi configured for VHF and UHF. I have been successful with the DRAWS Beta 5 image and running Direwolf/YAAC and now that I know the "core image" checks out and works. I rebooted the PI/DRAWS combo and shut down Direwolf and ax25 with this command sequence: cd bin, sudo su, ./ax25-disable.
I then selected fldigi from the drop down menu on the home screen of beta 5 image. When the configuration helper for fldigi comes to selecting the sound card I am left with one option and that is to select "pulseaudio" and it responds wit no pulseaudio server. It doesn't give me an option to choose udrc 0 or 1.
What do I do from here to get an audio source selected ???
Thanks

Re: Cant turn off direwolf and ax25

Bob Orrett <boborrett@...>

Merry Christmas,  Basil.
I dont expect to hear back from you for a few days.
I am trying to get wsjtx and js8call running. I did have this working so I know the 817 radio is ok. I could not use the supplied cables but I have an alternate cable that worked. However, now, with a new image burned, I cannot get the audio part to work. I do see the correct codec in settings for wsjtx and js8call but not audio appears. I
As you suggested, I tried stating direwolf with ./ax25-start but I get this message
A dependance job for ax25-mheardd.. service failed. See 'journalctl -xe' for details.
I did run journalctl -xe and got a full page report. I can screen capture it but I have no idea how to send it to you.
In red it says "Failed to start AX25 device"

So there must be something wrong with my new image but I have tried several times.
I did notice that the one time it did work, on first bootup ,I was asked a few questions before it went to the standard desktop. I have never been asked since for anything, no passwords, no timezone, etc, for any new image I have tried, either bata5 or beta5. It just goes directly to the standard desktop upon bootup. Even first time. To burn the image i download zipped file from your download page. Then unzip with windows 10 then burn to the sd card with Etcher. I usually just burn onto the same sd card that had the previous burn. Am I doing this correctly? Does it matter that the sd card was not empty when I burn onto it?

Btw my return on journalctl -xe also said
Error setting device : ax0 parks

Same for ax1

Hope that's enough info

There is no wiki dedicated to getting setup/started with DRAWS and HF Digital modes. There is information on DRAWS & Packet Radio. For the HF Digital operator, the very first thing they need to do is disable AX.25. Not trying to throw anyone under the bus, but I'm trying to help everyone understand a subgroup and wiki specifically for HF Digital modes with the DRAWS, would be a very good thing to start, after the holidays.

Would love to have a sked with you, perhaps during winter field day!? Yeah, regarding the DRAWS, I know my post was a little harsh, but I find leaving out the diplomacy puts everybody on the same page. It also gives confidence to others to come out and say they're having a problem as well. So, based on the comments on the two videos and the blog, I had hoped on getting the "getting started" video up after xmas. Lots of operators are counting on it for the HF digital side. I'm kind of feeling like I let them down.

Let's see what the NWDR team says about a wiki. I think it's critical, and worth it, even if it delays the end result. I'm also willing to contribute to it.
