Setting up auto time with draws gps #ntp #chrony #gps #clock #battery

Bob Orrett <boborrett@...>

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas,
This has most likely been covered before but I can't find it. How do I get the system time to automatically set from the draws gps at bootup without internet connection.
I enter "cgps -s" in the terminal window and the time sets after about 30 seconds for reasons that escape me. There must be a way to have this done automatically.
I expect you can tell that I am a newbie to RPi and linux so I need clear simple  step by step instructions. Please do not assume I will understand linux jargon. Someday I hope to be there but I am not there yet.  I dont mean to sound rude, I just dont want anyone to waste their time on me because they are afraid of insulting my intelligence.  Go ahead, insult me.

Re: Status: IC-7000 Audio Levels for V/UHF and HF modes #draws #ic7000 #hfmodes

Basil,

Found what I thought I remembered about IC-7000 data port sensitivity in the
SignaLink FAQ at www.tigertronics.com. Obviously this will have an impact on
DRAWS setup and operation with the IC-746Pro and the FT-450 as well.
Naturally, older radios will get pressed into field service - these just
happen to be commonly available and are "shelf spares" in quite a few
shacks. I am going to see if I can find more about the solutions to this
problem:

"ATTENTION IC-7000, IC-746PRO and FT-450 Users - Some customers have
reported that these radios have unusually sensitive Data Ports, which can
make adjustment of the SignaLink's TX knob somewhat difficult. If this is
the case with your radio, then *you should find that the procedure above
where you install jumper JP4 and lower the Wave volume control resolves the
issue*. However, you may also need to turn the radio's RF Power menu
setting down for better control. A power setting of 35 to 45 watts usually
works well for 25 to 35 watts of actual RF output as measured on a watt
meter, or the radios Power Output meter. "

First of all, thanks for all the time you are putting in.
See suggestion for PCM, LO Drive gain below.

Tried to take a scientific/stepwise approach with setting the DRAWS
board audio out today.

I went through the entire level and deviation check routine again
today and wound up with very similar settings to my previous attempts.
I then tested direwolf VHF-FM first and then after disabling AX25,
fldigi and wsjt-x on HF. Results "ain't purty", but at least everything
is being consistent.

Software function status:

VHF - with direwolf/Xastir transmitting and receiving on the local
packet network does work .

Comment: I don't really have a an easy/better way to test than
function on APRS network locally. I have a sense that the audio may be
high, but I won't know until I have time to putter with Spectrum Lab.
It will become my "Deviation Meter" with an IC-7100 functioning as my
"sensor".

Check this out by John Ackermann N8UR
Look for: "The No-Test-Equipment Packet Adjustment System"
https://www.febo.com/packet/layer-one/transmit.html

Do you have a handy talky?
use the measure_deviate script: n7nix/deviation/measure_deviate.sh
Pick a tone, bring-up alsamixer Set PCM to 0db & drop LO Drive until there
is no clipping ie. no distortion or just follow John Ackermann's suggestion.

UHF - have not tried anything yet. TBD

HF - With the alsamixer settings below (visually they produce the
"lowest splatter" per an IC-7300 panscope and using Spectrum Lab 2
with the IC-7300 internal audio subsystem via USB. Rig coax is
grounded, RF gain at 20% with 20dB of attenuation:

1. Fldigi drives the IC-7000 up to full power (if set) but transmits a
very dirty sig at any power above 5%.

Comment: The sig can be copied by others, but the ALC bar is reading 60%.
Not making any friends in the PSK world. These are ALC symptoms.
Reducing either the PCM level or LO Driver Gain results in very much
increased noise and a feedback like whistle at a different freq.
Increasing the two settings results in more splatter and harmonics.

2. WSJT-x receives just fine but DRAWS produces only an extremely low
transmit audio level according to the IC-7000 and signal being
received on other transceivers. Only testing with FT8 no other JT modes
tested. TBD:
wspr.

Comment: In transmit there is no Power Out deflection on the IC-7000 -
even if I adjust the PCM and IO Driver levels to the max, together or
separate.
So the PCM/LO Driver Gain level settings that "work" in fldigi, don't
work in wsjt-x. I even went back to check that invoking wsjt-x did not
somehow tweak the alsamixer settings. they remained the same.

Key Question: Why is DRAWS overdriving in fldigi, and then not putting
out enough audio level to drive the IC-7000 to set power level in
wjst-x FT8 mode with alsamixer settings remaining the same between apps?
I don't have an answer but your description is a good data point.

Here are my current alsamixer settings:

PCM L:[-21.50dB], R:[-21.50dB

ADC Level L:[-2.00dB], R:[-2.00dB]

LO Driver Gain L:[6.00dB], R:[6.00dB]

IN1 L:[10kOhm], R:[10kOhm]

IN2 L:[Off], R:[Off]
So PCM set that low is very suspicious. It means you are not using many
bits of the CODEC. I would play with returning PCM at least close to zero &
dropping LO Driver Gain down.

I am stuck until I can figure out how to coerce wsjt-x into
transmitting at set power with the same audio input levels to the rig as
provided in fldigi.
At this point I don't even care if the overdrive issue isn't solved. I
have decided to put the FT-817 aside because other are
working/reporting on it. I am only testing with the Beta 5 provided
software and the IC-7000 until I get these critical pieces working
reliably because that will be my main radio for this DRAWS kit.

Now need to go pay attention to other stuff (like family and the local
zoo of 4-legged furries we keep here on the farm).
Yep. I understand.

Thanks for thinking this through with me.
Thanks for taking such a methodical approach.

Re: Cant turn off direwolf and ax25 #configuration #management #draws #direwolf #ax25

Bob Orrett <boborrett@...>

Finally after many frustrating  days, wsjtx and js8call are working with the draws hat. It was my fault and probably a rookie mistake but I will explain in case others are making the same mistake.  It is in Basil's script. I read the script each time that I loaded a new image but I misinterpreted  how to use it.
There is a line that says, "if you want direwolf functionality, do this". Well , I didnt want direwolf so I didn't do the script below. A mistake! When I finally decided to run that script everything worked. I was always wondering  why I was never asked for a password (nwcompass).
But even then it took many tries before i finally noticed that between "app" and "config" there is an underscore "_" not a dash"-". I have never seen and underscore in a command before and the print is very small. I realize now that i should get my email with the raspberry pi so that i can cut and paste instead of read and type. Linux doesn't help you when you make a typing error. Just says that the command does not exist. That make me think there is something wrong with the program, not my typing.
I am a retired teacher and one thing i learned is that giving foolproof instructions is very difficult. There are often assumptions made by the reader and the writer that can result is complete misunderstandings. Adding the reason for a given command is a big help. Don't worry about insulting the reader, give hints and examples. Explain what the response to a given command should be.
Well, i feels good to be over this hurdle, on to the next.

As another FYI you do NEED AX.25 for Winlink on the RPi, paclink-unix &
Linux RMS Gateway, also the BBS. Also it is much easier with more
capability to use the ax.25 beacon command then to APRS beacon with
direwolf.

Art,

My experience as well, except when one might want to setup tunnel connection as part of the ampr.net (“44.” Net). I plan to be doing that with some DRAWS functions. I thought that was a big deal out there in the PacNW.

Re: Cant turn off direwolf and ax25 #configuration #management #draws #direwolf #ax25

That is correct.

Direwolf can run independently of the AX.25 stack.  And programs that can talk directly using agwpe or kiss over the network work just fine (e.g. YAAC, Xastir).  Basil has done a lot of work to have a stable, reproducible AX.25 stack available for a variety of programs that need it, including an RMS, BBS, and various other applications (commonly used in EMCOMM).  While running the AX.25 application stack, these (mostly APRS) applications can also run through the same direwolf instance, using the same radios, over agwpe or networked KISS.

Direwolf by itself is also a capable digipeater and igate, though we tend to use it more often as a modem and let other programs handle the higher level protocols.

Re: Status: IC-7000 Audio Levels for V/UHF and HF modes #draws #ic7000 #hfmodes

Basil, John

I setup Beta 6 today. The install was painless, it may be my growing comfort
with the setup, but it ran smoothly. Testing was where thing fell apart.
Unfortunately I still struggling to get the both the direwolf and fldigi
drives level adjusted with the IC-7000.

It appears that the poster who suggested a 100k ohm (variable) resistor in
the audio line from the DRAWS to the transceiver may be correct.

I will upload a text file of my observations while running the "Ackerman"
no-test-equipment deviation method" style adjustments and using the
"measure_deviate.sh" script if desired... but this should cover almost
everything:

In short:
1. Audio drive was too high for the IC-7000 as it was defaulted by
AX25/direwolf setup.
2. Used the "setalsa-udrc-alinco.sh" script to set the audio levels to a
level that "worked"
NOTE: I tried all of the scripts you included. The Alinco" levels produced a
signal my HT and APRS gateway could decode - it sounded hot though.
3. While "measure_deviate.sh" was activated, reduced PCM all the way, then
increased it until I heard no increase in volume of the received signal.
That point occurred at about -6.00 dB - but ALC on the rig was still very
high. LO Driver Gain level was already at -6.00 dB.
4. Re-enabled the AX.25/direwolf stuff and observed that these levels still
resulted in decodable APRS [packets).
5. Killed AX.25, went to fldigi and SSB to see how the audio output was
driving the 7000. ALC was still very high.
6. Increasing PCM increases distortion sound and visual splatter on Spectrum
Lab.
7. Backing PCM to -21.00dB saw the ALC start to drop - but would not drop
below 50% point.
8. Once PCM drops below about -25.00dB, the ALC starts to pump and the
signal gets dirty sounding with a feedback-like harmonic beginning to be
heard with loud hiss and crackling noises.

These "best outcome" alsamixer levels are still not optimal by any
descriptions I have read. I don't challenge that.
PCM L:[-21.00dB], R:[-21.00dB]
ADC Level L:[-5.00dB], R:[-5.00dB]
LO Driver Gain L:[-6.00dB], R:[-6.00dB]
IN1 L:[10kOhm], R:[10kOhm]
IN1 L:[Off], R:[Off]

Conclusion - AFAICT, clean audio IS being produced at higher PCM and LO
Driver Gain levels - but the signal is at too high a level for the IC-7000.

NOTE: I seem to remember I had to use the dropping resistor setting in the
SignaLink with this radio. So that leads me to the conclusion that a
variable resistor/ resistance network will be needed to get clean audio at a
level that the IC-7000 (and apparently some other radios) seems to like.

Next time I have the unit apart, I will try to find a good test point to
measure the actual amplitude of the signal with a handheld digital
oscilloscope I have.

Thanks for your patience with my ramble.

Read this:
https://github.com/nwdigitalradio/n7nix/blob/master/DRAWS_CONFIG.md

The step where you run

app_config.sh core

setups up your image & starts direwolf from systemd.
If you read to the bottom of the document you will learn the proper way
to stop & disable direwolf and the ax.25 stack.

Using killall leaves the ax.25 stack compromised and will give
unpredictable results later on.

Hi Jack,

As it was in Beta 5, having Basil’s scripts scattered between ~/bin,
~/n7nix/bin, and ~/n7nix/debug made doing the set up and testing a bit
of a challenge. Jumping around the different pieces of the directory
tree made for some interesting “not found” errors.
In the beta6 image after you have run the app_config.sh core script most of the commonly used scripts are copied to the local bin, ~/bin and that will be in your PATH if you are logged in as user pi. So you only need to type the name of the script. If you are required to be root then
just:
cd /home/pi/bin
./<name_of_the_script>

Good work guys! We really appreciate what you are doing.

John and Basil,

Good point on the appropriate scripts (not just killing direwolf)! I will be loading Beta 6 later today…

Suggestion: Is there any way these script functions can be put into/called by a “DRAWS/udrc control panel” app?

Merry Christmas Julian

All of the adjustment I made to the receive signal was through the ADC Level of the alsa mixer. FLDIGI has a go no go "diamond shaped" icon on the bottom tool bar of the main screen.   It lights up "black" for low receive audio, "Green" for ok and "Red" for over driven receive. The ADC Level adjustment got the green diamond to light with plenty of room to spare.

I wanted to share the good news of having success with the Beta6 image of draws with Direwolf ,  YAAC and a leap today with fldigi running on a Kenwood TM-V71 dual bander.

I downloaded the beta 6 image today and ran through Basil's "Verify_Config.md". I found a  notation symbol that gave me trouble until I changed it.

Under "check ALSA settings for deviation " instructions go as follows:

cd  ~/n7nix/debug

~/alsa-show.sh

I  removing the tilde and the ~/ for the line alsa-show.sh after trying the command as noted several times and then it ran fine.

At first I couldn't get fldigi to allow me to select udrc under the sound card configuration. It just wasn't there. During the Verify_Config.md the instructions required two changes in the /boot/config.txt to test analog audio un comment, remove the # from dtparam=audio=on and /boot/config.txt  hdmi_drive=2 when your done with the Verify_Config.md make sure you go back to /boot/config.txt and comment out, put the # at the beginning of the lines #dtparam=audio=on and #hdmi_drive=2.Reboot and run:

sudo su

cd ~/bin

./ax25-stop

also run :

sudo su

cd ~/bin

./ax25=disable

Now select fldigi from the "internet menu" on the home screen and you should be able to go to the "configure" menu of fldigi then sound card and select "port audio" in the drop down menu you should see the selection for "udrc". If you dont it either means you have not shut down ax25 or you didn't comment out dtparam=audio=on or hdmi_drive=2

Also from the home screen of pi go to preferences and bring up "Audio Device Settings" and setup PCM, ADC Level and LO Driver Gain.

I found that setting the audio out (Transmit) levels where easy to adjust to -20db using the alsa mixer controls of PCM and Lo Driver Gain. I use  a free audio spectrum analyzer called "Spectrum Lab ver 2.93" for setting the audio drive level on fldigi for FM vhf and uhf.  For HF the best thing is to adjust the xmit drive level so you have NO ALC showing for ssb transmit. The signals sound clean on second TM V71 I have. Also the receive gain was easy to adjust to keep the  audio within range of the green indicator diamond on fldigi.

I had not experienced the issues that people were having with FT817 at Ft 891 ?? but I had not tried fldigi with the beta 5 version of the image. Beta 6 seems to work just fine with  the Kenwood TM V71.

Hi Joe,

You have a radio I do not know anything about. I’m only about a week ahead of you in learning how to make DRAWS sing. I just happened to have been working with fldigi and my IC-7000 and the questions you asked were central to making fldigi work with the DRAWS hat audio device and that rig.

How did you configure fldigi to key your radio? Since you are no longer using a SignaLink, you can’t rely on the SL VOX keying circuit.  If you want to use VOX for PTT, the radio has to have a VOX function and it has to be set up and adjusted.

Only other approach I can think of is to make sure your radio can be controlled and/or keyed by flrig’s CAT control and set it up. Then set fldigi to control and key the radio using flrig. That seemed to work for me with my IC-7000 and Yaesu FT-817.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Jack

Next issue is with getting the radio to transmit. First off, I have used Fldigi with the TM-V71 many times on vhf uhf with success using a signalink and a sound cards with simple interfaces. I noticed right of the bat that the squelch on my radio does not stop the waterfall with the DRAWS interface...what is that about? Using the alsa mixer control no value of ADC changes the waterfall appearance, it doesn't dim or get brighter with open squelch. Squelching off the signal of the radio does not stop the water fall ??? I have never seen that before. Lastly I cant key the radio and no value of Lo Drive Gain or PCM makes any difference.

Do you have any suggestions ???

Joe,

  1. Check to make absolutely sure that Direwolf is not running after your reboot.
  2. If it is not running, you should see PortAudio as a selectable option. Check the box.
  3. Now Select udrc: - (hw:0,0) for both capture and playback.
  4. You can also check “Device supports fell duplex” (it is in mine by default and I just left it that way)

Hope that helped.

I am looking for some basic guidance on getting fldigi configured for VHF and UHF. I have been successful with the DRAWS Beta 5 image and running Direwolf/YAAC and now that I know the "core image" checks out and works. I rebooted the PI/DRAWS combo and shut down Direwolf and ax25 with this command sequence: cd bin, sudo su, ./ax25-disable.
I then selected fldigi from the drop down menu on the home screen of beta 5 image. When the configuration helper for fldigi comes to selecting the sound card I am left with one option and that is to select "pulseaudio" and it responds wit no pulseaudio server. It doesn't give me an option to choose udrc 0 or 1.
What do I do from here to get an audio source selected ???
Thanks
