One thing about the aluminum case that I'm curious about - what is the affect on the pi's built-in wifi? I assume that's been tested?

GPIO26 Is Connected to CODEC MP5

I don’t believe that it's used by the CODEC, so it should be available.

We’ll confirm with SW Engineering.

Thanks for hearing all of us. Wouldn't it have been easier to have remembered that early adopters were promised not only that a case would be available but that we'd get to pre-order it at a DISCOUNTED price? Hopefully you won't forget that.

John,

Thank you for looking into this issue.

I can appreciate the challenge the case presented with respect to the orientation of the SMA connector on the early adopter board and in the long term changing the SMA connector orientation is the logical solution.

All this time I was concerned with my ability to make the necessary change to modify the power connector to accommodate the case, hi hi.

I appreciate you going the extra mile.

Standby while we work out doing a special, one time, run for existing boards.

Once engineering works out the design issue, we will need to take orders to get a count of how many to manufacture, so be ready to place orders once we provide the details.

A later email will explain the engineering issue.

Re: Switch Audio

The DRAWS™ HAT and built-in Raspberry Pi audio CODECS are separate.

Edit /boot/config.txt and uncomment (near the end)
Isn't it possible to use both audio devices at the same time?

Save and reboot.
Reboot?? - Is this running windows?

Before I ran into DRAWS on the NWDigital website, I was already using a Raspberry Pi for my ThumbDV. I found this lovely device that I always intended to put on my Raspberry Pi, but never did. Now integrating both hats seems to be impractical or difficult...I'm not sure, I haven't examined it closely enough...and several features are redundant. But as a battery backup power supply that could work in tandem with a safe shutdown script, it would be very handy.

I use an ISOpwr in my car for an auxiliary battery in my trunk for my rigs. You could drop a 100ah SLA battery in your trunk and keep the Pi on all the time if you wanted!

Being an early customer of  draws I was expecting to purchase the aluminum case when it came out, now finding out you abandon us I have a diminished respect for your company. This is no way to treat early customers that put faith in your endeavors. Good luck with this way of doing business.

Look for something like a battery isolator to put between the RPi/DRAWS and the vehicle battery. West Mountain Radio makes one called ISOpwr but it’s a bit pricy. This setup should allow for automatic power-on with vehicle ignition. Then you could watch the sensor for the voltage drop and execute a safe shutdown script. Usually over 13.5 when running, falling below 12.6 when the motor stops.

Anyone automatically powering up/down (if that's possible) based on the 12v input sensor?  I'd like to have my pi sleep or power off at a configurable voltage so that it will never run the car battery down.  Ideally though I'd like it to power back up after the voltage comes up when the car is started.  I'm not opposed to pushing a button though :).

Excited to get started with this thing.  I'm planning to mount my DRAWS in the car as a headless APRS and Winlink device, possibly controlled with a physical switch to change modes or, ideally, it would just respond appropriately based on packets received, or based on a schedule (disable aprs, check e-mail, re-enable aprs).  Soundcard modes should be available via VNC with a bit more manual input...  I'll also be following the info I found here for automatically connecting to wifi when available, or creating a hotspot when out and about so the connection is not a problem.

So far not interested in DMR/DSTAR/etc type modes, but that's on the radar :).

Yes, remember that us early adopters were told that we'd get a discount on an early purchase of the aluminum case. Not so I see...

I saw the DRAWS board in the Aluminum Case at the Orlando Hamfest and ordered a board with the expectation of being able to get the case when it became available (I  was specifically told the case would be available in April). I have patiently waited for the case to become available, apparently now to no avail.

I’m in the same boat as Ed. Really wanted a metal case to cut out RFI and I know one other who was waiting for the metal case to come out and then we see Acrylic version posted yesterday via email.

I’m still learning how the Draws work

great work Todd on figuring this out.

I was able to create the script and I can now transmit with the draws on my OG IC-706

DRAWS Kit and Turnkey Available for Order

by k7udr

We have now opened orders for:

DRAWS Kit $199.95
For the Do-It-Your Selfer who wants to save money by doing the “Box Build” and SW Integration:

  • DRAWS HAT
  • GPS Antenna with LNA
  • 2 Mini DIN-6 M/M 2m Cables
  • Aluminum Case with 5.5mm x 2.1mm Power Connector
  • The customer will provide their own Raspberry Pi and SD Card (which are not included in the kit)

DRAWS Turnkey $299.95
Assembled and tested DRAWS in an Aluminum Case with Pi and SW Loaded:

  • DRAWS HAT
  • GPS Antenna with LNA
  • 2 Mini DIN-6 M/M 2m Cables
  • Aluminum Case with 5.5mm x 2.1mm Power Connector
  • Raspberry Pi 3B+ with Heatsink
  • 16GB Micro SD-CARD preloaded with image

If you have a back-order for a DRAWS HAT, we will provide a link to upgrade to a Kit or Turnkey Unit later this week.

For existing DRAWS Customers:

We have changed the HAT Layout to facilitate assembly, moving the SMA connector from the side to the end. This makes the new aluminum case incompatible with the Early-Adopter HATs.

We have partnered with C4Labs to make an excellent Acrylic Case that will work with either layout. Join their mailing list for price and delivery.

C4-DRAWS-Case

All Early-Adopters will also receive a discount coupon to purchase a Kit or TurnKey unit.
