Re: WSJT-X with UDRC anyone?

Thanks for the update. I am a bit confused at this point as the Mobilinkd cable appears to be a 6-pin din to separate mic and speaker cable which in turn plug into the sound card and the udrc cable should be 6-pin to 6-pin. The Mobilinkd cable is taking the output audio from the radio from pin 5 (1200 baud port) on the 6-pin cable as that tnc does not (yet) support 9600. The udrc uses pin 4 (9600 baud port) and I am not sure whether the digital-psk setting puts any signal on the 9k6 line. As a consequence you may need to use the digital-user specified setting to get the output to the udrc.  This is what I hope to test when I get back to my radio.

Thanks,

Just as an update to the group, we have been troubleshooting offline for a little while.  I ended up building a new compass image using the process that Basil outlined here.  In testing with Direwolf and measure_deviate.sh, PTT keys the radio just fine, but there is no output observed.  We were just starting to look at the output of gpio readall to see if there were any issues:

Re: WSJT-X with UDRC anyone?

At this point it is not clear as to the source of the problem.  I have seen this problem occur within fldigi on occasion even using other external sound cards if something in the  sound card driver gets confused and you will also get the same thing if there is no audio input signal from the radio. Just out of curiosity, do you see the same display if the 6-pin mini-din connector is disconnected (i.e., no radio attached)?

Also, is your C-Media card using the same 6-pin mini-din connector or are you using another audio out channel?

Thanks,

Specially since this sound card has many more settings then the sea media single volume control does.

No activity on the for a couple of days. Anyone else have any ideas I can try to cure this, or is it time to go back to square one, wipe the slate clean, and start over? How would I do that?

That may sound like a strange request, how to start over, but this is a team project and another fellow did all of the early work on this before I picked it up. I don't know what he did in the early stages.

   Hi Basil,

I read through core_install.sh and compared it to the configuration that I have manually done.  It appears that I've done most of what is in the script with a few exceptions.  I didn't evaluate past the ax25 setup because the application build doesn't really seem to be relevant to my problem.  The exceptions I found:

apt-get install -y mg jed rsync build-essential autoconf automake libtool git libasound2-dev whois libncurses5-dev

I haven't installed most of the packages above since they seem to be related to the application build process in the script.

# enable udrc
dtoverlay=udrc
I added dtoverlay=udrc to /boot/config.txt and rebooted; did not seem to make a difference.

cat << EOT >> /etc/modules
i2c-dev
Added i2c-dev to /etc/modules with no effect.  Verified module loaded on the next reboot.

I would be glad to build a new SD image on a different card and run core_install.sh if that would be helpful.  Just let me know.

  Thanks

Re: No output on UDRC-II

Thanks, Edouard, that is a great tip.  I re-enabled my on-board sound and tested the on-board output with a WAV file.  Then I tuned my radio to a busy packet channel and started arecord/aplay as you specify.  I'm not receiving any input from the UDRC-II which squares with the fact that Direwolf couldn't decode anything on the channel.

  Thanks

  Hi Basil,

I'll shoot you a copy of asound.state in a separate email, and I'll start comparing the instructions in CORE_INSTALL.md against my system.

I think we may need another update to the set-udrc-din6.sh/urdc-alsa-din6.sh script.  I ran the script to restore the standard mixer settings, but I noticed that asound.conf did not get updated (see below).  Looking at the script, I think 'alsactl store' needs to get moved below 'EOF' because it is a shell command:

Hello Mike,

I would like to suggest 2 things.

1. Send me via e-mail (@basil860) or post here, your alsa
mixer settings.

- in /var/lib/alsa is a file asound.state
- I want to compare that file to my file
- attach it to an e-mail to me

Depending on what we see in that file we will want to do #2 below

2. Use my install script to install core functionality.

- go here https://github.com/nwdigitalradio/n7nix/
- read CORE_INSTALL.md & follow those instructions
- This starts from a new compass image and relies on the script to
configure everything needed.

This will get you to a configuration I know works.

I'm assuming you have a UDRC II & are using the mini-din 6 connector.

/Basil n7nix

if this can help: I like to use the following one-liner to debug audio issues by ear, this will redirect your UDRC-II audio to the RPi audio jack, and this has helped me a lot when I was scratching my head with the creative use of the left/right input and output channels on the UDRC's audio codec chip ;)

arecord -D hw:CARD=udrc,DEV=0 -r 48000 -f S16_LE -c2 | aplay -

Re: WSJT-X with UDRC anyone?

I have not used WSTJ-X, but when I look at the waterfall display it does not look "normal." This looks exactly like the same oscillator spurs that you had in fldigi. I am not sure that the digital-psk setting is working as imagined. I will test this when I get home, but the "normal" display should be a filtered band of white (blue or yellow waterfall) noise (assuming there are no signals in the noise), with no uniformly spaced lines. If you were to have the signals you should be able to see the tones at the various signal offsets (i.e., they do not look like straight lines), which are not present in your current display.

Thanks,

You should be able to use din6 virtual soundcard for both in and out.  Those sub soundcards are more for special cases.
