I'm newbie #2. So I can power the DRAWS/Pi with the power cable that came with the Pi? The cord that came with the DRAWS, what do people use for connectors and power sources so the power goes to the HAT?

Since Raspbian has built-in support for VNC, that’s what I and a lot of my ham friends use for headless remote control. You can do either a local network connection over Ethernet using your Pi’s IP address, or you can take advantage of RealVNC’s cloud support feature to reach your Pi over the Internet using its hostname. I went a step back from my goals and installed a fresh NWDR image and did step by step the instructions, also keep the "old" kernel. So far as I can say and the programs I can test: FLrig, Fldigi, Wsjt, Js8call and Claws are running. So with this I#m quite happy.
Next I want to install PAT and Headless Pi so I'll report about the results - on the other hand if somebody has hints for this, this would be very wellcome.

I did a fresh installation (#5710) but the Error on starting Hamlib (4.1) for Wsjtx ist still there. Result before I stopped pulse audio:

Michael,

I've added a script (setalsa-fmt3000_tm733.sh) to the local bin
directory that sets ALSA controls for both Yaesu FMT-3000 (left
connector) and a Kenwood TM-733 (right connector).

I do not own either of these radios so the settings are preliminary.

To get the new script:

cd
cd n7nix/config
./bin_refresh

Compared to the settings supplied by Michael KJ7OOB this script routes receive input
from the AUDIO radio connection, NOT DESCRIMINATOR.

From the script (feel free to edit to your liking):

All of the other ALSA settings for the TI tlv320aic codec are set to
nominal values. I'm certain that after using this script you will need
to verify deviation on both radios. A guide to set deviation can be

To change receive routing from 'audio' to 'discriminator' edit file
/etc/ax25/port.conf:

# port0 is left mDin6 connector.

and run setalsa-fmt3000_tm733.sh script.

Run 'alsa-show.sh' to verify ALSA control settings.

Hi Basil,

Thanks will combine this with my efforts to make an enhanced image for my needs (#5700). I described the error in #5690 - formated as it was in the terminal window. It is the problem, that I have to start the rigctld in the terminal two times to get it working - in between this two times I do nothing else, but afterwards it is running. You mentioned that I should remind you about the systemd service file for this step :-)

will try this on a fresh installation -  step by step and take care of the kernel. I will tell you the results from the "Checkpoints" maybe it is helpful for others too..

Cause I want to use more the digital modes some additional programs are therefore required:
  • For WINLINK: PAT, ARDOPC, ARDOPGUI,
  • Additional for JS8Call: JS8CallUtilities_V2, js8call_aprsmessaging_interface, (QRZLookup), RealtimeLogUpload

Michael,

Thanks for the console output especially showudrc.sh. From that I see
there is no routing for the right hand connector receive signal.

IN1 L:[10 kOhm] R:[Off]
IN2 L:[Off] R:[Off]
You can fix this by running alsamixer, using F6 to select the udrc sound
card, then scrolling right to find 'IN1_R to Right Mixer Positive
Resistor [Off]'. Up arrow to select '10 kOhm', and ESC to exit.

Use script alsa-show.sh both before & after running alsamixer to confirm
that you set the correct control. Your IN1/IN2 routing left & right
connectors should look like the following:

IN1 L:[10 kOhm] R:[10 kOhm]
IN2 L:[Off] R:[Off]

If you send me the console output of alsa-show.sh I will write a script
that will set the correct alsa control values for your 2 radios.

Yaesu FMT-300 left connector, Kenwwod TM-733 right connector.

Since I do not have these 2 radios I assume you have alsa controls 'LO
Driver Gain' and 'PCM' set for reasonable FM deviation and I will use
the output of alsa-show.sh to set up those controls and proper receive
routing for 1200 baud in the new script.

I have setup LinBBS (FBB) that was installed by the script in /home/pi/n7nix/bbs/bbs_install.sh
and I believe I have it configured correctly as it transmits a beacon and has no errors.  Although it will not respond
to connection attempts over the radio using both ports on the DRAWS hat. Let me summarize my setup
 
Left port connected by supplied minidin cable to Yaesu FTM-300. monitoring/user station
 
Right port connected by supplied miniden cable to Kenwood TM-733. BBS station
 
Both radios have been configured to use 1200 baud and both radios transmit encode/decode through
the ports via ax25/direwolf configuration from DRAWS.  I have connected to external BBS stations and 
processed email over winlink with them.
 
Even reversed the ports (right with left) and both still transmit fine.
 
LinBBS is configured to run off port ax1 connected to the TM-733 and it transmits a beacon which I can 
monitor on FTM-300 (on ax0) which I know is being encoded/decoded correct as I see the output in linpac and dump
to terminal output using listen -at.
 
I think I have something screwed up in port.sys file of LinBBS but for life of me I can't seem to sort 
it out.  Is there any reason in DRAWS that I wouldn't be able to run a BBS on ax1 and connect to it from
ax0 over FM?

This probably isn't a DRAWS issue and if not I apologize for making everyone read all this.  Any help at all is very

or do I need to still plug that into micro USB?
Either power with 12V with the connector on the DRAWS board OR use the
micro USB on the RPi. NEVER both at once.

Hardware question about power

So I am finally getting around to building up my DRAWs, and have a question that I can't seem to find doccumentation about.

There is a white 2 pin connector on the DRAWs, I am guessing I can put anderson power pole connectors on the pig tail that came with my case and plug that into my rigrunner power distribution block and be all set.  Will this also power the PI or do I need to still plug that into micro USB?

What is the black 8 pin connector for?

I only support the NWDR image. A lot of time has gone into making sure
things run properly in that environment. If you have a DRAWS hat I
haven't seen a compelling reason not to use the NWDR image.

Why I want to take the "build a pi" is that there are more progs I
want to use without fiddling with single installation on the Draws
image.

Having said that ...

If you use your own custom image the most common problem is that the
Raspbian kernel was broken sometime between 12/15/2020 & 01/07/2021

The last kernel that had a working tlv320aic driver required by DRAWS
was version: 5.4.83

The earliest kernel that has fixes for this driver and a couple of other
problems is version: 5.10.31 which has NOT been released by the Raspbian
Pi Foundation.

To display your current kernel version:

uname -r

If you use the following command you will get a bleeding edge
(unreleased) kernel from Raspbian that 'should' have the kernel fixes.

sudo rpi-upgrade

If you are NOT using the NWDR image I would recommend getting my scripts
anyways to help debug things. As user pi:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git

cd
git clone https://github.com/nwdigitalradio/n7nix
cd n7nix/config
./bin_refresh.sh

Now run the bug info script and post the results.

buginfo.sh

To verify that you are running the latest versions of the HF programs

cd
cd n7nix/hfprogs

./hf_verchk.sh -l

But the error when putting presets for ham radio in the terminal
before I start JS8call or WSJTx is already present.
Could you please post the error you are referring to.

Bought my KX3 from a HAM how sold his equipment and the cable from hammadeparts.

rigctld-wsjtx -m 2045 -r /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 38400 -P GPIO -p 12

pi@pi:~ $ ls /dev/ttyUSB*
/dev/ttyUSB0

In the attachment find the result of the syslog. There are some errors
on pulsaudio "ALSA".
Yes I have had a few problems with pulseaudio since end of last year. I
am currently ignoring those errors as I do not use pulseaudio.

To effectively stop pulseaudio:

# get the latest version of my scripts.

cd
cd n7nix/config
./bin_refresh.sh

# Run the following script to disable pulseaudio

pa-ctrl.sh

My settings are in the attachment. FLrig, Fldigi, WSJTX and JS8Call are running. Settings on Hamlib, except FLrig is set on K3.
