Static IP address in Compass

I am trying to create a static IP address in compass.  I have modified /etc/network/interfaces as follows, but it still uses DHCP.  Why?

-------------------

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface eth0 inet static
   address 192.168.1.53
   netmask 255.255.255.0
   network 192.168.1.0
   broadcast 192.168.1.255
   gateway 192.168.1.1
---------------------------

I gave up on having to deal with the two different methods of statically assigning IP addresses depending on if you're using 'Wheezy' or 'Jessie', and now enter a static IP address reservation in the router running DHCP.

Life is complicated enough :)
